Perlis
The most northern gateway of Malaysia , Perlis ,is borded to Thailand on the North and Kedah in the east and south. It is a harmonious blend of the ethnic Malays, Chinese, Indians as well as the Thais .
Perlis history dated back as early as 1800s. It was originally part of the older kingdom of Kedah before was conquered by Thailand in 1820. The restoration of the Sultan of Kedah to his throne in 1842, saw the establishment of Perlis as a Thai vassal state. The suzerainty of Perlis was handed down to British after The Anglo – Siamese Treaty in 1909. But was consequently handed back to the Thailand during the World War II. British regained back its control on Perlis after the war ended until Malaya gained independance.
The Perlis delicacies varies from its local Laksa Perlis , Grilled seafood accompanied with the traditional Air Asam or the Sambal Belacan and some Thai’s cusines. Interestingly , you may find grilled Petai served in the food stalls around Perlis .
With most of the other states in Malaysia are covered with the oil palm plantations , the Perlis landscape instead is dominated by lush sugar cane plantations. There is also a large Harumanis (Mango ) Plantation which is flocked by mango lovers during the fruit season . Sweet mango desserts eaten with steamed glutiniuos rice are commonly found during the season .
